The weather is getting warmer. You know what that means - SUMMER! Here are some tips to help have a fun, healthy summer with your family.
Sunscreen - Be sure to use SPF 30 or higher to help prevent skin cancer. Remember to apply sunscreen to your face and body. And don’t forget your hat and sunglasses. Depending on your hair growth pattern, you also might want to apply some sunscreen to your scalp to prevent scalp sunburn. If you do get a sunburn, over-the-counter aloe vera can help soothe the burn. Avoid picking at the burn and allow it to heal naturally.
Stay hydrated - If your day is jam-packed, it can be easy to forget to drink enough fluids. You should be drinking half of your body weight in lbs in ounces of water (ie. If you weigh 100 lbs, then drink 50 oz of water; 150 lbs, drink 75 oz; 200 lbs of water, then 100 oz, etc.). One helpful way to remember to drink enough water is by using a large water bottle. If you can visualize how much water you need to drink during the day, it will be easier for you to achieve that goal. Additionally, your kids might be motivated to drink their water if it comes in a cute reusable water bottle. Letting your kids pick their drink container can be a fun way to have the kids engaged in their own hydration.
Keep in mind WHEN you exercise - You might want to consider exercising earlier or later in the day depending on the weather outside to avoid dehydration or heat exhaustion. If you usually exercise in the middle of the day or during your lunch break, it might be worth looking at other options. Maybe you can go for a walk in the morning or go for a walk with your significant other after work. Additionally, many gyms have aquatic centers, where you can exercise and stay cool in the water.
Eat a balanced diet - Summer can be a great time to BBQ. Be sure to throw some refreshing fruits and veggies into the mix. Apples, blueberries, watermelon, eggplant, tomatoes, and zucchini are in season right now so it is the perfect time to enjoy these treats. Farmers’ markets are a fun way for kids to get involved with picking out healthy meals. They get the opportunity to sample fresh, local fruits and vegetables and let you know which ones they want to enjoy at home.
Water activities - It can be fun to go swimming at the pool or lake, boating or paddleboarding, etc. during the summer. While enjoying these activities, make sure you are conscious of safety precautions. Appropriate personal flotation vests should be worn when enjoying time at the river, lake, or ocean. If you are with young ones make sure you keep your eyes on them. Remember hydration and sunscreen on your outdoor adventures as well.
