The Why of 100 Miles

Our team at Creekside OB/GYN of Folsom understands that not every mother’s journey is simple or straightforward. That’s why Timothy Phelan, MD, is so passionate about supporting the Sacramento Life Center, an organization that offers guidance and support to women as they enter motherhood. 

What is the Sacramento Life Center?

The Sacramento Life Center is a medical clinic that is licensed and accredited by the state of California. The center provides pregnancy support services to thousands of women each year, many who are living at or below the poverty line. 

Services include free well-woman exams and screenings for sexually transmitted diseases. Expectant mothers have access to ultrasounds and parenting classes free of charge. There’s even an online educational program, and participants can earn a free stroller or car seat. 

Once a family welcomes their child into the world, the support doesn’t end. Sacramento Life Center offers free diapers and baby clothing. Parents can come in and pick up new clothing as their little one grows, all the way up to 24 months of age!

What is the Canyons 100-mile trail race?

The Canyons 100-mile trail race is an endurance event that begins at the China Wall Campground and ends in Auburn, California, a town known as the birthplace of mountain ultra racing. All runners must complete the challenging course within 35 hours. 

The race presents a total of 18,000 feet of climbing and a descent of more than 22,000 feet. Throughout the race, runners enjoy views of the beautiful Sierras as well as features like stream crossings, old wooden bridges, and stretches of forest. 

The course passes through a number of historic settlements, including Michigan Bluff, Foresthill, Cool, and Volcano Creek. The course covers some of the sites used by both prospectors and their mules during the Gold Rush in the mid-1800s.

Timothy Phelan, MD, has dedicated his professional life to delivering outstanding women’s health services to those in his care, including expectant mothers as they navigate pregnancy. An avid runner, Dr. Phelan has participated in more than 50 running events. He has run in 14 road marathons and more than 25 ultra marathons. 

Since 2020, Dr. Phelan has raised more than $25,000 for the Sacramento Life Center through various running events. This year, he’s running the Canyons 100-mile race in the hopes of raising $20,000 to help the center expand its health and nutrition services for new mothers.
